The largest and most magnificent pyramid ever built in ancient Egypt was the Great Pyramid at Giza. It was built for King Khufu, and was completed around 2550 BC. The Great Pyramid was built with around 2,300,000 blocks of stone with an average weight of 2.5 to 15 tonnes each, these blocks measures around 230 metres in length. The Great Pyramid was estimated to have have towered about 146.6 metres high but has since shrunk due to the blocks being removed to construct buildings around Cairo in the middle ages. Near The Great Pyramid also lies The Sphinx which is one of the most popular monuments on Earth and which was built 4,500 years built during the time of King Khafre. The Sphinx is about 73.5 metres in length, and it is believed that the head of the Sphinx probably depicts that of King Khafre, while the body is that of a recumbent lion.
